Grand format, or super wide, banners are the kings and queens of banner because they stand out and are readable from a relatively great distance. Well-designed event, stadia branding and building wraps provide cover up of otherwise unsightly buildings and structures and offer excellent opportunities to overlay and project the look and feel of the event or project.
Regardless of the size, the client has less than 5 seconds to convey the message to viewers. That’s the average attention span of a banner, it seems. Your role is to ensure that the design the client submits is sharp, crisp, uncluttered and that it is suitable for the environment and the desired audience takeaway. Gently advise and help to refine the artwork so that the client gets maximum impact and value for the investment.
When it comes to producing the banner, consider these options:
1. Excellent Frontlit Materials for Outdoor Grand Format Jobs
The primary requirements are durability (but lightweight), UV resistant, and probably fire retardancy for some building or local authority regulations and insurance conditions. Consider these options from our Ultraflex range:
Ultima Pro 450gsm White / White option
Ultima Pro 450gsm is our most popular frontlit banner PVC combining 1,000 x 1,000 denier, 18 x 18 woven base cloth construction. Having a high-quality hybrid/semi-coated surface combined with a woven base cloth which produces excellent print consistency and market leading tear and tensile strength performance. If you are looking for a compromise between traditional laminates and knife coating this material is an excellent choice. It was widely used for stadium and city dressing applications during the RWC 2015. Recommend for use with Crystal Tension Frame and Spirit Flex Frame systems. Formulated UV, eco-solvent and latex printing and is B1 fire rated. Rolls up to 5m wide. Download the Technical Specsheet here.
Ultima Pro Eclipse 450gsm White / Black option
Ultima Pro Eclipse 450 is the black back version of our most popular frontlit banner, incorporating 1,000 x 1,000 denier with 18 x 18 woven base cloth. The black back prevents show through making it ideal for the wrapping of temporary event structures/venues and other Night & Day applications. Having a high-quality hybrid/semi-coated surface combined with a woven base cloth produces excellent print consistency and market leading tear and tensile strength performance. Recommend for use with Crystal Tension Frame and Spirit Flex Frame systems. Formulated for UV, eco-solvent and latex printing and is B1 fire rated. Rolls up to 5m wide. 2. Substrates for Frontlit Grand Format Banners
Very often, selecting the best substrate to deliver the effect the client wants can be the difference between adequate and a superb delivery. What works for an indoor application viewed from 2 metres away will not be as effective at 50 metres outdoors, and vice versa. It pays to get to know the characteristics and plus points of as many substrates as possible. We present just a few that work well in grand format mode on surfaces such as walls.
